August 2025

This month’s highlights

Micromite Explore-40

A wealth of software has been written for the Micromite; The BackShed online forum is a great place to find much of it. The compact Explore-40 board described here is a Micromite in the same factor as the popular Pico boards, allowing a Micromite to be used with hardware designed for the Pico.

Techno Talk

Max’s column this month discusses the topic of pseudo-intelligence and PI-enabled software design tools.

Special feature: The MIPI I3C Serial Bus

Introducing a brand new serial bus named I3C, or Improved Inter-Integrated Circuit that is starting to appear in mainstream applications. This feature explains everything you need to know about the newly emerging protocol.

Thanks to its ‘learning’ function, this eight-channel relay board can have its outputs switched on or off using almost any IR remote control, including ‘universal’ types. Each channel can be configured to toggle on or off, switched on for a preset period, or a momentary action, switched while the button is held down. Discrete through-hole construction for straightforward assembly.

Circuit Surgery
Topics in Digital Signal Processing
Implementing DSP on a microcontroller, Part 3

Continuing on the very advanced topic of getting to grips with the principles of digital signal processing.

Audio Out

Our analogue audio expert explores the intricacies of the classic Baxandall network.

FlexiDice

This latest incarnation of a classic electronic dice uses a PIC micro and OLED graphics display to produce a fun-to-use module offering dice with 2-9 pips, a numeric dice from two-100, a random playing card with 0-6 jokers and a heads or tails coin tosser. It’s powered by a 3V lithium coin cell.

Surface mount components are used throughout and good soldering skills are needed to complete this project successfully.

Max’s Cool Beans
Weird & Wonderful Arduino Projects
Part 8: In which we handle switches like heroes

Advanced techniques for switch controls, debouncing and associated techniques are described this month.

The Fox Report

The very latest news and views regarding Freely and the future of UK television services.

180-230V DC Motor Speed Controller (Part 2)

Our new High-voltage DC Motor Speed Controller can operate motors commonly found in lathes and treadmills. It maintains a constant speed even under load. Part Two this month covers the assembly, testing and setup of the Speed Controller.

WARNING HIGH VOLTAGE MAINS IS PRESENT THROUGHOUT. CONSTRUCTION OF THIS PROJECT SUITABLE FOR ADVANCED AND EXPERIENCED CONSTRUCTORS ONLY.

Precision Electronics
Part 8: Voltage References

This instalment describes how voltage references work, as they are critical to the precision of both ADCs and DACs.

Next month
